Evidence: Picture-based communication systems like PECS (Bondy & Frost, 1994) are evidence-based for individuals with complex communication needs. AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) increases functional communication and reduces challenging behaviour (Beukelman & Light, 2020). Visual supports are recommended as a core strategy by the National Professional Development Center on ASD.
