Evidence: Choice-making opportunities increase engagement, reduce challenging behaviour, and promote self-determination (Shogren et al., 2004). Visual choice boards are an evidence-based practice for individuals with complex communication needs (Lancioni et al., 2003). Choice promotes autonomy, a core principle of self-determination theory (Deci & Ryan, 2000).
