Evidence: Specific, behaviour-focused praise is among the strategies that help increase wanted behaviours and prevent disruption (Kern & Clemens, 2007, review). Positive reinforcement is a core principle of applied behaviour analysis (Kazdin, 2001) and a Tier 1 PBIS strategy. That praise should be specific (“you raised your hand”), immediate and sincere is a usual practical guideline (Sugai et al., 2000), not a measured result.

Level of evidence: B (partial support). Basis: Reinforcement and specific praise: moderate support (Kern & Clemens, 2007; Sugai et al., 2000). Limits: Specific praise has been studied less than reinforcement in general; the effect varies by student.
