Evidence: Specific, behaviour-focused praise increases target behaviours and reduces disruption (Kern & Clemens, 2007). Positive reinforcement is a core ABA principle (Kazdin, 2001) and a Tier 1 PBIS strategy. Research shows praise should be specific ("you raised your hand"), immediate, and sincere (Sugai et al., 2000).
