Tip: Write rules in positive (“I raise my hand”) not negative (“Don't shout”)
Evidence: A small number of positively stated rules that are taught and reviewed is one of the classroom management practices with research support (Simonsen et al., 2008, review). Stating them positively (“walk” rather than “don't run”) and displaying them with visual supports is common good practice; the figure of 3 to 5 rules is a practical guideline, not a study result.

Level of evidence: B (partial support). Basis: A few rules, stated positively and explicitly taught (Simonsen et al., 2008, review). Limits: Support is for the practice as a whole; there are no figures on how much it reduces disruptive behaviour.
